Studio Art Office | Op die fiets #4: hoe opereren Studio Seine, A Tale of a Tub en Cool Clay Collective?

We will continue our series in 2024 On that bike*, a bicycle tour for Rotterdam artists along artist initiatives in the city. We take a look behind the scenes of various initiatives to find out more about how they work and discuss (possible) similarities with our own art practice. Exchange is central: visitors and the initiatives can ask each other questions.

The bike tour passes three initiatives, lasts approximately three hours and ends with a drink at one of the locations. The tour is not only informative, but also a great opportunity for networking. During the fourth edition on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, we will visit various initiatives in Rotterdam-West: Cool Clay Collective, A Tale of a Tub and Studio Seine. What are the motivations, challenges and starting points for artists in these initiatives? Find out this afternoon.

Cool Clay Collective

We start with the newest shoot on the tree: Cool Clay Collective only opened at the beginning of December 2023. Initiated by artists who also work with other materials, the ceramic workshop is an option for artists to expand the repertoire of materials and even organize a residency there. Do it for 2 months. In addition to the technical facilities of 4 ovens of different sizes, it is also possible to obtain advice and thus deepen your own practice. To what extent was the risk for this initiative bearable precisely because of the collective idea? What were the obstacles during the founding and what were the reactions from the supporting quarters?

A Tale of a Tub

The second stop takes us to A Tale of a Tub, the internationally oriented, non-commercial exhibition space, which has been housed in the Justus van Effen complex since 2014.
This year, a new, young management team with Isabelle Scully and Sofie Post has been appointed to program the 'testing ground' for artistic research, with a focus on current social issues.
Are there any changes in course planned and what vision do they have for the Rotterdam arts field?

Studio Seine

Studio Seine was started by Linda Seine in 2016 as an exhibition space for contemporary art in a former car garage. With thematic exhibitions and group and solo exhibitions, the space has grown into a regular player in the arts field, with the important step of participating in a trade fair. Questions such as visibility as a player in the field play just as important a role as offering visibility for a larger and specific audience. What plans and obstacles are there? What learnings have been gained along the way?

* 'On that bike' is a translation of the Rotterdam Expression 'Op die Fiets', which means as much as a way of doing things. Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after that manner (“in that manner, that way”), where mode (“manner, way”) is replaced with bicycle (“bicycle”). The phrase originates from Rotterdam, but has since spread. Source: Wikipedia
