Studio Art Office | Op die fiets #2: hoe werken Brutus, IJzerblok en Huidenclub?

Together with Ewald x Ross we organize On that bike*, a series for Rotterdam artists along artist initiatives in the city. We take a look behind the scenes of various initiatives to find out more about how they work and discuss (possible) similarities with their own art practice. Exchange is central: the initiatives can also ask questions to visitors. The bike tour passes three initiatives, lasts approximately three hours and ends with a drink at one of the locations. The tour is not only informative, but also a great opportunity for networking! During the second edition on Wednesday, September 20, we will visit various initiatives in Rotterdam-West: the IJzerblok, Brutus and Huidenclub.

IJzerblok

Het IJzerblok consists of a number of studios in an original residential complex of Woonbron. Almost all tenants have left since 2020, after which art students and recent graduates are allowed to use the homes as studios. The accompanying garden of 600 square meters has been completely refreshed with a self-funded budget. There is even a stage for performances. The only downside: the stay is temporary. The artists must leave the former residential complex in August 2024. Sachia Perreira Stolle, artist and contact person for Woonbron, tells us all about this special temporary use of the building. What alliances do the artists enter into in the area and to what extent do they build or maintain a network with external organizations and other artists?

Brutus

The second stop takes us to Brutus, the 'artist-driven playground' on the Keileweg. You may have been there before or even exhibited there during the Wild Summer of Art-exhibitions. Joep van Lieshout's 'brainchild' is a multifaceted initiative with a sculpture garden, as a location for concerts and events, and exhibition space. During our visit, three works by Santiago Sierra will be presented as a test to investigate possible further collaboration. With the exhibition Petromelancholia is reflected on a life beyond oil. Sanne ten Brink, director of Brutus, will further explain the concept of Brutus and the collaboration with external partners (including artists).

Hide club

We conclude this afternoon with a visit to Huidenclub, located in the Diepenveen building since 2021. This monumental building houses studios, VideVide bookshop, an exhibition space and a café. From next year, the Huidenclub will also open workshops for Rotterdam artists. Chantal Schoemakers or Guus Voorham take us through the building, the exhibition and workshop spaces. We end the afternoon here with a drink.

* 'On that bike' is a translation of the Rotterdam Expression 'Op die Fiets', which means as much as a way of doing things. Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after that manner (“in that manner, that way”), where mode (“manner, way”) is replaced with bicycle (“bicycle”). The phrase originates from Rotterdam, but has since spread. Source: Wikipedia
