The exhibition opens on Friday 24 February SELFHOOD: A Manifestation of Wholeness by Aqueene Wilson in the Pumping Station on South. Everyone is welcome between 19.00 and 21.00 p.m., admission is free.

The exhibition explores a new aesthetic of blackness by representing or depicting the entire multiplicity of black women. This deviates from normative visual language and works towards an image that offers space for everyone. The work deliberately responds to the lack of seeing black women as people with individual identities, without excluding the formative factors of collectivity such as sisterhood, lineage, culture and community. Attempting to challenge the idea that blackness is homogeneous, the work forms a holistic love letter with notes of defiance that incorporates visual activism.
