It started with the body. The body, bruised and aching after working from sunrise to sunset in the harbor, was washed here and found rest and recovery. Over the past hundred years, the bathhouse has been transformed into a monument that contains an art space. Here, the body is considered as a reflection of the celestial body that is our planet. Hidden in plain sight, the slow, all-consuming grinding that our comforts enable continues steadily.

In The Ground Up And The Washed Down we, the heirs of this grinding, draw from the filtered residue. What can we learn from what is left behind? What do we see when we lift the ground? What do we feel when we perceive with our whole body? How has time washed us away and how do we create space for recovery?

About curator Yin Yin Wong
