I bring the outsider in an old story and myself, an outsider today, onto the same stage. I collect myths and legends, personal memories and sentences from everyday life, and weave them into text, objects, sound and movement. Visitors enter these installations and performances, experiencing the stories by walking, touching objects and sometimes wearing them.

Some stories have survived longer than I have, changing through many voices and across time. Others arise in my own body: missing or hating someone, wanting to care for them, giving up or holding on, and finding myself in an unfamiliar place.

They do not form a clear narrative at first. Sentences, memories, images and objects float within me until an event, a place or another story brings them together. I observe these relationships and rearrange my writing into diagrams, lexicons or scripts. These guide the materials, sound, movement and visitors’ paths. I build the story and the space together.

I am Korean, born in the United States, raised across several countries and cities, and living in the Netherlands since 2012. I have become used to adapting to languages, cultural expectations and social positions. To some extent, I think of myself as a ‘professional outsider’.

I do not quite know what it feels like to be fully rooted in one place. No language feels entirely mine, nor is there one being I pray to when anxious. I do not see these absences as gaps I must fill. I observe how my body changes when home, language, roles and relationships are not fixed.

For me, the body is a place where social, emotional and temporal relationships become visible. It changes between Korea and the Netherlands, between the studio and my work as a scalp therapist, between Korean and English. I record the selves that endure, perform, defend themselves, try to remain kind or give up. Longing, resignation, sensitivity, resistance and persistence take form through wood, fabric, ceramics, metal, drawing, sound and movement.

Each trunk functions as a moving archive: a structure that stores objects, scripts, sensory devices, and different modes of the body. In this video, the trunks are opened one by one, revealing their internal systems and the way each object is held, positioned, and activated. number 9 and the invitation to the trickster’s party
number 9 and the invitation to the trickster’s party - Re:FWD group exhibition, Kunstlinie and NDSM FUSE Installation with ceramics, wood, textiles, drawings and suspended objects For Re, I reconfigured number 9 into an arrangement of low wooden platforms, upright panels, ceramic figures, suspended elements and padded textile forms. Shifts in scale and open spaces between the structures allowed visitors to encounter different relationships as they moved through the installation. Reconstructing the work prompted me to question how far I actually lived the attitudes I valued in the stories I had researched. The distance between the mythological figure and the person telling the story became a subject in itself. This exhibition marked the beginning of a shift towards bringing my own position, memories and everyday experiences more directly into the work.
number 9
number 9 - number 9 (2024) Sandberg Instituut graduation presentation, Amsterdam Ceramics, wood, textiles and drawings number 9 developed from my research into Jeju mythology, particularly stories of women who arrive in unfamiliar places and establish their own roles despite rejection or abandonment. I was drawn to how resistance and resignation coexist in their lives, and recognised connections with my own experience as a Korean woman living in the Netherlands. Through ceramics, wood, textiles and drawings, I explored how these narratives could take material and spatial form. Mythological figures offered an indirect way to address belonging, endurance and the relationship between a body and its surroundings. At this stage, I deliberately kept my personal identity in the background, allowing the stories, symbols and relationships between materials to carry these questions.
a push-over
a push-over performance documentation - a push-over is a performance and installation by Daeun Lim, presented at CBK Zuidoost Kunstcafé on April 18, 2026. This video documents a live activation of the exhibition space. Through wearable objects, trunks, gestures, spoken text, narrative, music, and audience interaction, the work moves through questions of care, kindness, efficiency, sensitivity, exhaustion, and the many roles one body is asked to perform. The work asks how much one body can carry in order to remain functional, lovable, useful, and present. someone's someone
someone's someone - someone's someone is an exhibition by Daeun Lim about relationality, distance, longing, and the way the body changes before emotions become language. This video documents the exhibition space from outside while the exhibition text plays as subtitles. The work follows a sequence of emotional shifts: being clearly someone's someone, falling apart, longing, reunion, disappointment, resignation, and the unexpected emergence of someone new to miss. The exhibition borrows the atmosphere and structure of airports — mobility, suspension, checkpoints, passage, and temporary belonging — to think through how relationships continue to shape the body, even after people are no longer physically present. In a push-over, Daeun Lim explores the many versions of herself that emerge in response to everyday social roles and demands. Shaped by migration, language, gender, race, labor, and artistic precarity, these versions are translated into five wheeled trunks containing wearable modular fragments. Presented as a backstage, the installation invites visitors to touch and carefully try on attitudes, gestures, and states of mind.

someone’s someone is an installation exhibition composed of objects, sound, and text.
The objects are displayed as translations of the writings Daeun made over the last six months, after experiencing several significant separations from people she loved.
She tries to communicate the subtle changes in her body—her gaze, the way she walks, the scents she reaches for, the music she listens to—when she has someone to miss.
