Falke Pisano (based in Rotterdam) works as an artist and educator, and organizes and researches within the artistic and educational field. Her practices persistently engage with institutions to address and challenge their roles in society. Her current research explores historic and contemporary forms and domains of institutional governance, aiming to create space for imagination and disruption within this class-coded societal field. Pisano initiated the Workgroup Art Educators with support of Platform BK, teaches at the Master Fine Art at HKU, Utrecht, and organizes within the cultural field to support political and economic literacy within the art field.
For her first gallery show in a while, Pisano will be exhibiting at Hollybush Gardens in London at the end of 2027. She is preparing a publication based on her work, in collaboration with Irene de Craen and publisher Jesse Presse, in which Pisano's work forms a lens for looking at institutionalization and the building of institutions in the nineteenth century as part of the long history of imperialism, colonialism and patriarchy, drawing connections to the domain of art and its — institutionalized — norms and morals. The book brings together various series of work Pisano has made over the past fifteen years, but it is not a traditional overview of an artist's oeuvre. Instead, it opens up the work in order to further articulate how we can deinstitutionalize our societies and communities.
With Jack Segbars, Pisano conducts research into the (infra)structural, economic and political conditions of cultural practitioners and the organizations they are involved in — partly together since 2024. Interested in the politics, economy and aesthetics of how work and the visual art infrastructure are organized, they participate in, organize and connect conversations in the field. They make their research public by writing articles, organizing public events, and teaching.
