Walter Mingledorff is a collector of peculiar and outcast objects, often sourced from second-hand shops, thrift stores, and eBay. Through these cultural artifacts, he excavates memories, weaving together fragments of the past to reinterpret contemporary society and explore relationships between humans and non-humans. Working primarily in three-dimensional sculpture, Mingledorff uses found objects as his medium, collaging symbols of consumerist culture into reimagined mythologies and histories.

Born in Florida, Mingledorff grew up surrounded by the strange and eclectic, a sensibility that continues to inform his artistic practice. He earned a BA in Furniture Design and Apparel Design from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and later completed an MA in Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven.

Sand Castle Stool
Sand Castle Stool - Sandcastles are often built by digging sand from one place, putting it in plastic molds that dramatically simplified ancient architecture, and plopping it on a new foundation. The Sandcastle Stools follow the same process, however the final sand castle eternalized by taking a new mold and casting soft foam inside. The result is an uncanny replica that uses materiality to shift the familiar to something strange. The work reflects the manipulation of nostalgia. When symbols of nostalgia are reproduced in mass, like souvenirs we begin to question whether we are remembering our own experiences or a shared standardized version.
