Aubane Berthommé Martinez

Aubane is a working-class multidisciplinary artist and curator. She mainly experiments with photography and painting to explore and question power dynamics and identity, focusing on gender and sexuality. She gazes at the gaze by reappropriating exotified and historical western aesthetics, using self-representation as an empowering process. Her visual language combines pop culture, kitsch, plants and extravagance.
In 2020 and 2022, she created Squish (a queer and feminist cultural platform) and Kollection Kitsch (a permanent bar exhibition series).
With protean events, Squish questions identity politics with an intersectional approach, facilitates social dialogue, cultural, supports emerging artists, combining accessibility research-based and non-academic approaches to facilitate solidarity/support among marginalized communities.
KK makes art more accessible, featuring local proletarian artists exploring rejected/mocked aesthetics/themes. The collective deconstructs dominant bourgeois gazes, celebrates bad taste and pop culture.

    • Squish radio is an organic spontaneous open mic program featuring queer and LGBTQIA+ people from the local creative scene. Each of the three hosts developed series of sessions tackling themes they have at heart. Aubane will introduce and interview visual artists and performers. Beside this casual and intimate program, she will run Blanket Huts, a series of podcasts gathering researchers and creatives to discuss topics concerning queerness, genders and sexualities.

    • Kollection Kitsch is an exhibition space melting with Wunderbar where artists, curators, neighbors and art lovers can come together to enjoy art over a drink. The exhibitions last for 3 months and focus on a different theme. Small format artworks are on sale for 10 euros in a customized candy machine.
