“Would it have been given to me to take one memory from my earthly existence into eternity, it would be this:
1994. Crete. The Lefka Ori, or the White Mountains. A two-day hike, well above the tree line. Heat. Silence. Desolation. Nothing but white rock, brilliant in the sun.
On the second day I spot hundreds of small, horn-shaped shells on a ledge on a rock face. Not even 2 centimeters high. Side by side they stand proudly in the rock. At that moment I am crushed by the realization that I am at an altitude of 2000 meters as well as at the bottom of the Mediterranean. To be in the here and now, as well as millions of years ago. The additional deep realization of my insignificance was more liberating than terrifying. If existence ends now, I thought, it would be good. There is no more. ”
