Esther Stasse

ceramics

How non-functional does a vase have to be to also exist as visual art? That is the leading question within Esther Stasse's oeuvre. Although she mainly sees herself as an artist, you could also see her work as free design and even design. While working, she investigates how volumes relate to emptiness, a purely sculptural starting point. There is often a rectangular volume that becomes dynamic and spacious by applying horizontal and vertical beams. Without exception, she has been working with black glaze in recent years, so that nothing distracts from the shape.

  • Location: HAKA building, Rotterdam
  • Together with storytelling photographer Frieda Mellema, I looked for beautiful places to take photos of my work in the empty HAKA building. This resulted in six photos with a tranquil, serene, almost monastery-like appearance. Martijn Simons has written a beautiful poetic text to accompany the whole. Title: 'But we can believe the big/the other' The photos and text are available in a limited edition.
