Harold Houdijk

abstract - audiovisual

Harold Houdijk is an audiovisual artist based in Rotterdam, NL. He studied and taught audiovisual design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. What is most important to Harold in his art, is to try to work without a concept, and see where the materials and tools he uses lead him. The output is not fixed, nor is the inspiration or input for the artwork. The starting point can be something trivial like found footage, objects or other information – its essence revealed by the artist and his tools. This way seemingly random input generates seemingly random, yet very controlled output.

Harold expects an open mind from the viewers of his art. His main goal is to evoke emotions through his works, although he does not want to dictate the viewer's reaction. The objective of his ongoing experimentations is to create l'art pour l'art – in his eyes the purest form of art. Art that only exists to let viewers have their own personal experience.

Zevenluik (Heptalogy) - ‘Zevenluik' (Heptalogy) is a series of seven inextricably linked artworks. A study of harmony, composition, order, dynamics and interference. Each work in the series is part of a larger whole. By reuniting the separate parts side by side in the correct order, they connect seamlessly in shape and movement, and form the complete work of art ‘Zevenluik'. The implicit assignment of the overarching work of art is therefore to reassemble the seven works and restore the mutual coherence. Head Switching Noise (Recollections) - ‘Head Switching Noise (Recollections)’ is a series of artworks based on collective audiovisual memories — memories of events from the twentieth century, as captured by cameras, stored on video tape, and subsequently viewed by millions of viewers worldwide, over and over again. These collective audiovisual memories have been translated into abstract contexts of colours, shapes and sounds. The artworks explore how memories change and deteriorate over time — both in our human brains and on analog media. Please visit https://opensea.io/collection/headswitchingnoise to view the artworks.
Transfiguratie 284 - ‘Transfiguratie 284’ is a celebration of the unknown, the uncontrolled. It’s a trip into elusive refractions of shapes, colours and abstract emotions. (https://www.seditionart.com/harold-houdijk/transfiguratie-4k-1)
