Reality is an important topic in my still life photography. These series of still life consist of multiple photos. The essence is not to hide the fact that it is a constructed narrative but to allow the viewer to create their own story.
In the bird still lives it is important that you can see their character and motives, as birds have very different personalities. Also the chosen food, flowers and objects always have a seasonal or personal motive. Materiality, form and color are also important, they have to match and compliment each other.

This materiality and my love for construction is also visible in the series organic vases. Here the historic motive of a still life with vases (ie Morandi) is visually leading but the objects themselves are a constructed fiction of an ideal reality where object and purpose playfully come together.

Residence SIM Reykjavik Iceland

Residencies / exchange

  • 01-12-2007 t/m 31-12-2007
  • In collaboration with: SIM
  • Location: Seljavegur, Reykjavik
  • During this residency I captured the Icelandic tradition of remembering the dead during the Advent period in a series consisting of documentary and landscape photography. I was particularly interested in capturing the differences between the vast empty landscape and the elaborate domestic (sometimes somewhat professorial) decorations on the graves. I have also researched and recorded the local differences within this tradition.

Exhibition Kunstuitleen Roterdam

Exhibition / presentation

  • 05-04-2023 t/m 19-04-2023
  • In collaboration with: Marielle Wichards
  • Location: Kunstuitleen Rotterdam, Rotterdam
  • Photographer Hester Blankestijn and product designer Mariëlle Wichards showed their project organic vases for the Rotterdam talent in the spotlight exhibition. These fictitious vases are the product of color and material research in which the flexibility of the stems suffers for the shape of the vases. The compositions in which the vases are displayed refer to the visual language of still life masters such as Georgio Morandi. More information at http://constructednature.nl
