From the beginning of 2020 my photo portraits are mainly in color. The recent color works still stem from the original fascination with observing people, but I now allow myself to be more active in making the image. However, my working method is always documentary and I always work on location. This contributes to the specific qualities of the final image that I wish. It is a great challenge that with my work I will have to transcend the inescapable qualities of the portrait as identity, place and time. However, if I succeed, it is precisely the combination of all the desired properties that will produce the effects I have in mind. By creating a (specific) universality, I try to create a profound connection.

    • In this duo show we will bring two artists together with distinctly different art practices. Jan de Bruin is an observer, he makes photographic portraits of people he meets on the street, has short encounters with, and people he has known for years. He uses his camera to approach people, capturing them seemingly off guard at the precise moment between apprehension and trust. His subjects are waiting for an answer and make you ill at ease with their piercing vulnerability and questioning eyes.

    • Jan de Bruin's black and white portraits can be described as intimate and authentic. The people he chooses to capture are not changed in appearance or placed in a staged environment. His disarmed way of working creates images that reveal the hidden between maker and subject.

    • In the winter and spring of 2021, photographer Jan de Bruin portrayed clients in two healthcare institutions that remained open despite the corona pandemic. In GGZ De Hoop in Dordrecht and at the daytime activities of the Pluspunt Foundation in Rotterdam, De Bruin met, as he describes himself, honesty itself. People who, in view of their situation, don't beat around the bush, so to speak. This series was created because De Bruin strives for this quality in his work.

    Architecture of Zero

    • During the exhibition 'Architecture of Zero' I was able to fill the so-called Pink Wall at Eye Love You Artspace. This section of the exhibition space is intended for presentations that fall outside the theme of the exhibition. I have shown a number of photographic works as an introduction to the 'Mayke' project, which will eventually be published in book form.
