John Giskes

performance - photography - video - graphics

This artist is fascinated by theatrical working methods and contemporary visual techniques. This distinguishes him from most of his contemporaries who actually do not know what to do with digital techniques and the digital tools that come within the artist's reach. But trained in the analogue world, craftsmanship is a permanent element in his work. Since 2007, John has increasingly focused on performances. In doing so, he has embraced Butoh (modern Japanese dance form). In addition to the representations that he has designed, he has created a lot of visual material as an independent work of art. That includes photos and videos. Photographer Mick Otten is enthusiastic about the work of John Giskes, whom he regularly follows photographically. The nice thing is that John carries out many elements of his work himself, in addition to his work as a photographer and videographer he makes costumes, don't be surprised if you see all kinds of rolls of fabric piled up next to the sewing machines in his studio.

Performance

  • 04-06-2007
  • In collaboration with: Dancers, musicians and circus artists
  • Performances based on the inner body. The deeper layers in the unconscious, freeing as theatrical form. The awareness that we are all one, all life on earth forms one organism with each other, a constantly regenerating life. All those entities are connected to each other, resonate with each other. I do performances alone or in collaboration with others. Dancers who work in the same 'space' and musicians, composers who are touched by the realization of their inner being
