Juliette Tulkens focuses on drawing and painting with a wide spectrum of use of materials and themes. Her studious character takes her through centuries of painting, absorbing all facets of old and contemporary paintings in order to further process all this knowledge in her work. She investigates various painting techniques; eg egg tempera, oil paint, but certainly also the latest developments in digital drawing and painting. She uses these techniques in a free way to arrive at a balanced image in which they are regularly examined together within a painting. Thematically, too, she draws from the rich historical visual history of painting in which Tulkens has refined contemporary visual culture. The drawings, paintings and also digital work show a thorough study of colour, composition, material and figuration. Although her work is created intuitively, it expresses a universal imagination that offers the viewer plenty of room to project their own experience and story onto the work.
