Ka Yee Li

photography - performance - installation - painting

Ka Yee Li grew up in her parents' restaurant, between the Chinese takeout and the snack bar. When there were few or no customers, she mainly drew faces and flower-like shapes on the coasters and takeaway paper.

After studying fashion design at WDKA in Rotterdam, she decided to continue with visual art and performances. She uses different techniques to represent her ideas and emotions. Her background as a fashion designer eventually inspired her to draw on her school portraits with the sewing machine.

Other photo portraits she takes often belong to people from her own relationships. Out of a feeling of love, she runs her hand over the face and edits it with medium, acrylic paint, (color) pencil, etc. Some portraits show peculiar grimaces due to her playful approach.

In her melancholy urge for nostalgia, she transforms memories into perfection: she casually supplements her past with new memoirs each time.

  • 22-08-2016 t/m 04-09-2016
  • In collaboration with: Art Museum (Akureyri)
  • Location: Performance Festival, Akureyri
  • Collaboration Akureyri Museum during the A! performance festival. Ka Yee Li suddenly appeared and invited passengers to celebrate her “birthday” with her. Passengers were invited to light the candles and sing for her. Two days long, she blew out candles, every day, until she was totally exhausted. During these performances, Ka Yee catches up her birthday parties, that she had missed out during her childhood, attempting to relive these important moments from the past.
