Katrein Breukers

education - installation - ceramics - performance - textile

Coming from a family of artists and musicians, Katrein Breukers (1991) creates sculptures and installations that arise in close relation to her own life. Her practice consists of material research, its repurposing and combining different techniques and media. She makes scissors or a plastic supermarket bag from ceramic and rope, or a carpet beater from aluminum. Characteristic in this is the way in which Breukers creates new meanings by combining these objects. As if she wants to withdraw the objects from the everyday and give them a new character. By presenting the objects produced by her together with existing utility objects, the whole acquires a narrative dimension. Her work naturally functions as a balance to express the balance between a utility object and a sculpture, between craft and matter and between order and chaos.

  • In collaboration with: Mickey Yang
  • Location: The Factory, Eindhoven
  • Inspired by crafts, traditions and the landscape, Katrein and Mickey traveled to Marrakech, the surrounding villages and the Atlas Mountains and traveled to the Sahara to get to know local artisans, the contemporary art scene and Moroccan traditions in relation to the visual – and material culture. The title Amazigh is inspired by a series of recurring dilemmas arising from misinterpretations during this journey.
