Laurien Dumbar

abstract - painting - photography

Laurien Dumbar is an abstract painter who works with photography. With an I-Phone she looks at the edges of painting and investigates 'the illusion of space' in relation to 'the painter's gesture'. In her studio she looks for messy painterly situations that arise in a setting of everyday materials. By painting plastic, paper or cardboard and then moving, shifting or simply dropping it, she tries, in short accidental moments of painterly significance, to make the painterly space tangible. The large digital prints that she has made of these photos are matte and intense in color. The skin is real and tangible, but at the same time it is also an image. So an intermediate space.
Dumbar wonders what abstract painting can be in the reality we live in, with screens between us and reality, in which the digital mindset has made our view double.
