Marie Claire Gellings

artistic research - collage - installation

My interest has always been in architecture, I collect urban, architectural images in an intuitive way. This passion for collecting gives rise to work that seeks a middle ground between 2D and 3D in different sizes and materials. I use and reuse the things around me. The assemblages/collages that result from this are never finished, the play with shapes is the actual work.
A new step in this process is a different approach to shape and material. No longer does the material dictate the shape, but the shape will indicate which material should be used. I make enlargements of shapes from an archive of small assemblage sketches. The installations are life-size so that people can walk through them to experience the work even more effectively. The play between 3D and 2D, which remains a starting point as always, will still support the work.
