Nicky Assmann

audiovisual - film - installation - Light - performance

The immaterial and elusive character of light, color and movement forms the starting point for the spatial installations in which Nicky Assmann tries to sharpen perception. She combines artistic, scientific and cinematographic knowledge in physiological and chemical experiments. Inspired by natural and optical phenomena, she creates visual music compositions aimed at a sensory experience. In the vein of expanded cinema, Assmann experiments in her work with the different aspects of the cinematographic apparatus. She develops her own screens from different materials, which vary from iridescent soap films, burnt, patinated copper plates, metal grids and rotating perspex plates with moiré patterns. Her work manifests itself in the form of kinetic installations, video installations and performances. Assmann received the Witteveen+Bos Kunst+Techniek oeuvre prize 2020. She exhibits her work worldwide and recently created her first work of art in public space; the video sculpture Vertebra.
