Niki Murphy

abstract - process - artistic research - graphics

After studying art at St. Joost, Rietveld, Kunstakademie Dusseldorf and practicing in Berlin, Cambridge and Yorkshire I eventually returned to the Netherlands in 2008 and have been living in Rotterdam ever since.
I make large composite drawings. Textures and structures of the physical environment in which I work have a direct influence on the outcome of the work. Whilst in this process I explore the limits and possibilities of this environment. It is a systematic investigation into the (un)limited space.

  • In the Pacific Ocean, east of the Fiji Islands, lies an archipelago that makes up the Kingdom of Tonga. The Tonga Islands are particularly famous for the 'tin post' that was established there in 1882. In order not to have to sail through the dangerous reefs, the mail was thrown overboard in large biscuit tins and fished out of the sea from the island by swimmers or rowing boats. On the occasion of 45 years of Printing in the Marge, the 'tin post' is revived once again.

  • 66 artists from Germany and the Netherlands were interested in 'doing something different' in this time of Corona. You received a video of a stack of 6 books. The dice determined your book. You then passed two random numbers and followed the second video in which a line of text appeared. You created a work from this line of text. As soon as the work was completed based on a line of text, a photo(s) of the work was posted on the site.

  • For the temporary artwork (on display until the end of April 2018) 'Hier & Daar', Niki Murphy was inspired by the elongated shape of the guardhouse with the rounded ends. She immediately associated this with the oloid. The multipe – a small work of art in edition – is a handmade ceramic mould. This free interpretation of the oloid is reminiscent of tears that flowed profusely in the Schreiershuisje.
