Pris Roos is an artist, curator, researcher and storyteller. As a child she grew up in the toko of her family who emigrated from Indonesia. For Pris Roos, the toko symbolizes a space of togetherness, colors, smells, food, stories and a mixture of people from different backgrounds. The toko is a source of wealth for her art practice. She is an artist who works with different media such as painting, spoken word, video, performance and installation. By focusing on observation and careful listening in the people she meets, she reflects on topics such as identity, migration and memory.

  • An exhibition in Paviljoen aan het Water about the residents around and in the Wijk- en Speeltuinvereniging Tarwewijk. A project started together with the artists Reinaart Vanhoe, Marielle Verdijk, Rieneke de Vries, Zoë Cochia and George Owen to take care of the playground during a pandemic with workshops for the children and parents. During the workshops I had conversations with volunteers, parents and children and made portraits of them.

  • Meanwhile: an exhibition in Speeltuin Tarwewijk How can an artist - in this time of lack of interaction - provide a place such as a public playground with energy and imagination again. During the summer we held workshops with the children and parents of the playground. I have interviewed and painted a number of visitors and volunteers and two of these portraits will travel around the Tarwewijk for a year as 'pass on artworks'.

  • All you can Art is an open studio, exhibition and Summer School all in one organized by Instituto Buena Bista and the Kunsthal. As an artist, I was able to guide a group of young talents during this exhibition from my art practice in the summer school. I also made a number of interactive works in which visitors are challenged to portray each other coronaproof.

  • An installation and collective reading that refers to A vinh Tran, a boat refugee who fled Vietnam in the XNUMXs after Vietnam was divided into a communist North and an anti-communist South. Roos was inspired for this work by her conversation with A vinh Tran. Along with the installation, there was the release of care packages with a fried rice recipe from my family and the reading of a transcript of the conversation.

  • I See I See I See I See Daily Paper, Clan de Banlieue, Sumibu and Concrete Blossom in Rotterdam-West (2021) An installation following the observation of a conversation organized by Concrete Blossom hosted by Quinna and in which Jordan, Abder and Richard talk about the past, present and future of their brands and fashion. The portraits show the faces responsible for these important black-owned businesses, brands and initiatives in the street setting.

  • Together with Erico Smit and Frank Stoks, we have been given the task of portraying Rotterdam in 2020 at the time of a pandemic in our own personal report of what we see. From everyday scenes at home, but from the inside out and then onto the streets from where we come and go. The city is our oasis. Together with my binoculars, sketchbook and oil pastels I started painting the city on paper as a city draftsman.

  • Co-responsible for residency trajectory in Urban Arts Center. The residency is for young talents aged 19-23 who have not yet had an education in the arts. Every year at the Urban Arts Center we offer a young talent the opportunity to walk with an artist and work towards the goal of becoming a creative maker. Against reduction, they also get their own space in which they can develop. We know that some young talents can have a hard time at home.
