Paint

I distil my visual language from simple everyday phenomena such as signs, shapes or objects and reduce them to symbol or icon-like figures. While sketching and sliding, the image is adjusted, simplified, distorted, varied, doubled, mirrored and can later be sampled for a next painting. Meanwhile, a whole arsenal of shapes has been created that is subsequently applied in series. This creates a new world in which the relationship between different forms is explored in depth and in which new meanings and interpretations can arise.

The paintings eventually form a timeline that moves back and forth, in which memories are also loosely incorporated. Moments that have sometimes nestled in the memory in a strange way and claim a place there. Systematizing these meaningful coincidences, ordering, rearranging and distorting one thing leads to another.

Project

  • 11-12-2021 t/m 22-12-2021
  • In collaboration with: Students Codarts
  • Location: Hilton Art Lab, Rotterdam
  • In December '21, as a follow-up to two murals the year before, I organized a project in which cotton served as the carrier. The painted scenes (240 x 340 cm) could now also be hung across the project space or at a distance from the walls. During the opening, these canvases also formed the backdrop for dancers who performed an improvisation to music composed especially for the occasion by Otto Rissanen (all students of Codarts Rotterdam).
