In Jeanine Verloop's kinetic installations, her love for craft comes together with a fascination for technology. Many of her works, including the recent machines Symbiote and Evanescent, are vulnerable due to the proximity of the public who want to touch or operate the sculptures. The artist has since come to regard these circumstances as an unavoidable aspect of her work. For example, she has become curious about what happens when the spectator is left to his own devices without supervision. Verloop is turning the tables with the Impulses project. Using sensors and the minicomputer Raspberry Pi, she explores the possibility of making her sculptures react to their environment and the audience. In this way the machine evolves as a performer, and the spectator transforms into a participant. During this research she develops a series of experimental, kinetic glass prototypes that use a sensor in different ways. It is her intention that these objects provide insight into the added value and possibilities of sensors for my work. The project is concluded with an exhibition in which the new prototypes are tested. According to the advisory committee, Verloop's quest for interactivity adds an exciting new layer to her work, which can yield a lot for her practice.
