Evelien de Bruijn

glass art - man - collage - painting

My work revolves around human life, my life. I research how family relationships, heredity, but also external factors influence our personality. I visualize my constant internal struggle and my need to look inside other people, understand them and connect with them. In recent years I have studied women's history through matrilineal pedigree research. This led to the portrait series Forgotten Forefathers. My work is personal and vulnerable. Because of my background as an architect, I like to work with different materials and structures. Glass in particular has my fascination. In the vulnerability of glass, I see the vulnerability of people. I also see the hardness, color and reflection. With the sensory properties of the material, I visualize our stories, our emotions, struggles and euphoria.

  • The Infinite Women Podcast is an American-Australian podcast that focuses on the stories and achievements of forgotten women in history. We talked about the importance of accurate documentation of women's lives. Because women were under the tutelage of their husbands, much less was recorded in history about their activities. When you dig further, sometimes you can find it. This information regularly paints a different picture than the population registers indicate.

  • A series of new portraits in which I search for our foremothers with the help of other women from my family. Based on archival research and family stories, I look for our connection with these foremothers. These women appear to have 450 years of history in Peel. Is there a connection between their lives and ours? Can we regain a piece of this lost identity? The portraits are exhibited at two locations in Peel.

  • Location: OBN Funeral Home, Nieuwleusen
  • For the funeral home of the OBN in Nieuwleusen I made an appliqué inspired by the growth rings of a tree. This tree has different colors and cracks, which represent life stages – such as adolescence or a beautiful journey and events such as marriage and birth. But also for sad moments, when you have to say goodbye to a loved one.
