Hans Schuttenbeld

Hans Schuttenbeld (1991) is a multi- and interdisciplinary maker who calls himself a psychedelic poet since the summer of 2021. In his work he uses trained skills such as calligrapher, painter, draftsman, designer and thinker. Wonder is a main theme from which he starts and works towards.

In 2020 he received the Young Talent Work Grant from the Mondriaan Fund to stimulate his artistic research and collective practices. With his Bachelor of Design degree (WdKA Rotterdam, 2015) he belonged to the first batch of 'young talents' within the revised conditions for this stipend.

Where sharing, connecting and collaborating are among the core values ​​of Schuttenbeld, he practices this in:

- exhibitions (Kunsthal KAdE, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Netherlands Film Festival)

  • The day starts for Hans Schuttenbeld with making a drawing. These fall under the Morning Meditations series that has been running for a number of years now. Within this series there are often phases that are characterized by a certain use of materials. In his current phase, Hans works on Kodak photographic paper with coffee and India ink. The format and his method have led to the name “Kodak Momenta”, which refers to the visualization of the inner landscapes during awakening.

Prospects, Art Rotterdam

  • The tenth edition of Prospects, the exhibition of the Mondriaan Fund, shows work by all artists who recently received a contribution for the development of their professional practice. Schuttenbeld showed three paintings and looks back on a great success. "It was so special to share this with you. Reactions, compliments, encounters, received so much in return!" He sold two works and is currently in good contact with the interested gallerist Roger Katwijk.

Being State of Mind

  • Location: S/ash gaery, Rotterdam
  • The three-headed creature focuses on experimentation and collective painting in which choices are made by the group. The unexpected adventures, visual dialogues and confrontational sensations keep the trio moving forward. Through three residencies, they transformed the gallery into one large work of art. During the finnisage, visitors could see the results of their shared adventure.

One Page Story

  • Location: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in De Glasfabriek, Schiedam
  • Schuttenbeld showed an installation of paintings that are an enlargement of a page from his drawing book One-Page Stories. The images are abstract black and white compositions that can then be interpreted. In this way, the viewer creates his or her own story and the work functions as a catalyst.

  • The High on Type collective stayed in one of the factory buildings and used it as their studio. With black and white paint they played different writing games and thus brought the perspective on 'writing' to another level.
