Inge Aanstoot

painting - history - artistic research - autobiographical - figurative

My oeuvre mainly consists of large, full, narrative paintings. I investigate differences and similarities between past and present, religion and science, culture and nature, and want to stimulate the viewer to look beyond the obvious two sides to a story.
I try to let a spectator discover connections in the stories I tell. My work cannot be read as a rebus. I try to take the viewer along in my own train of thought: the more you learn about a subject, the more complex it becomes.
Three quotes summarize my approach well: 'The past is a foreign country' (LP Hartley), 'Temperance is wickedness' (Stephen Fry) and 'Knowledge consists of details' (Arnon Grunberg).

I also work with Anique Weve under the pseudonym Marie Pop. For example, we investigate how we can function together as one artist, and we also examine our individual working methods.

Rock Me Ouroboros

Project

  • 01-03-2022 t/m 12-06-2022
  • In collaboration with: Auke Triesschijn
  • Location: Bad Foundation, Rotterdam
  • Project in which artist and designer Auke Triesschijn and I met weekly to react visually and substantively to each other's work: an endless visual conversation. The result was a large amount of new, free work, which we showed in the art showcases of the Bad Foundation. We also organized an opening and finissage event, where the spectators had lunch with us in an exhibition installation under a maypole. We also made a small publication.

The Opulent Temple of the Lost Paradise

  • 11-07-2020 t/m 06-09-2020
  • In collaboration with: Marie Pop (collaboration with Anique Weve)
  • Location: Contour Gallery, Rotterdam
  • Exhibition with performances based on the Bacchanal in coronat time. First major series of works by Marie Pop: both 2D and installation & performance. Marie Pop investigated what was missing in times of Covid, at the time of the first lockdowns. In 2021 the project was followed up by Contour, plus a presentation at Art Rotterdam.

Lions on the Coolsingel

Project

  • 23-12-2019 t/m 01-12-2021
  • Location: Museum Rotterdam, Rotterdam
  • As part of the exhibition 'Leeuwen op de Coolsingel', about Rotterdam in wartime on the basis of (wild) stories from the city, I was allowed to make a mural in Museum Rotterdam. In the run-up to this, I conducted research into daily life during the occupation, with the help of the Rotterdam City Archives, among others. I focused on, among other things, Diergaarde Blijdorp during the Second World War. (photo: Lotte Stekelenburg)

If Paradise Is Half As Nice #8

Project

  • 23-07-2018 t/m 31-08-2018
  • In collaboration with: members of ipihan (if paradise is half as nice) and guest artists
  • Location: (one-time) Konsum Kaufhaus, Altenburg (Thuringia)
  • I was allowed to participate as a guest artist with IPIHAN #8; a project in which a group of artists work for several weeks in an empty building in East Germany. In the former, dilapidated department store (with an industrial bakery and sausage factory!) we each worked on our own projects; we presented the results during a well-attended opening weekend. I delved into the history of the city and made sculptures and installations in addition to paintings. (photo: Aad Hoogendoorn)

sic semper

Task

  • 16-04-2016 t/m 18-09-2016
  • Location: Kunsthal, Rotterdam
  • In the Kunsthal Rotterdam I was allowed to make a mural of 30 meters in Hall 6, the sloping space that can also be seen from the outside through a large glass window. 'Sic semper' (that's how it will remain / that's how it will continue to be) is an associative work about the subjectivity of history, and how people manipulate history through the ages. The mural disappeared under a layer of wall paint after the exhibition. (photo: Marcel Kollen)
