painting - history - artistic research - autobiographical - figurative

My oeuvre mainly consists of large, full, narrative paintings. I investigate differences and similarities between past and present, religion and science, culture and nature, and want to stimulate the viewer to look beyond the obvious two sides to a story.
I try to let a spectator discover connections in the stories I tell. My work cannot be read as a rebus. I try to take the viewer along in my own train of thought: the more you learn about a subject, the more complex it becomes.
Three quotes summarize my approach well: 'The past is a foreign country' (LP Hartley), 'Temperance is wickedness' (Stephen Fry) and 'Knowledge consists of details' (Arnon Grunberg).

I also work with Anique Weve under the pseudonym Marie Pop. For example, we investigate how we can function together as one artist, and we also examine our individual working methods.
