Ash Kilmartin

geluid - performance - printen (2d) - sculptuur

Ash Kilmartin is an artist from Aotearoa (New Zealand), who has been active in Rotterdam since 2015. Her recent work concerns the speaking voice as an aid in finding and creating public space, as a hinge between the physical material of the body and the social fabric of language. She is interested in historical characterizations of the speaking body; in non-linguistic vocalizations such as communication; and how the voice can be translated into spelling, texture or space. She works in performance, sculpture, sound and text.

Promise and Demand (with Collette Rayner), 2019

Residenties / uitwisseling

  • Locatie: Yellow Brick, Athens
  • 'Promise and Demand' was a short research residency with Collette Rayner at Yellow Brick, Athens. We explored the idea of gossip against the grain of negative connotations. Our conversations culminated in a lino-printing workshop, where participants could choose an existing image-fragment to cut and print, with or without their own embellishments, with each fragment making up a larger image very different from the original design. Supported by CBK Rotterdam and the ECF's STEP travel grant.

The Almanack of Breath, 2018

Lezing

  • The Almanack of Breath tells the story of two demons, one of exists in Medieval texts and one who I invented as a contemporary rebuttal to the first, nasty one. Against Tutivillus, also known as the Recording Demon, I write the tale of a nameless creature, an invisible and inaudible allegorical figure of Listening. Against the punitive, eavesdropping and misogynist Tutivillus, she promotes an ethics of listening by collecting and donating different forms of breath to those who need it.

Gaps, 2018

  • Locatie: De Player, Rotterdam
  • A fragmented monologue about forgetfulness, fear of memory loss, and grief. Beginning as a story set in a pancake house, it quickly disintegrates into internal arguments about the history of the grapheme 'æ', the name Ash, the disappearance of the letter 'h', and where a bike was parked (and whether it was stolen or lost). With soundtrack or 2 cassette tapes.

You, as a paragraph (2018-19)

Performance

  • Locatie: Koffie en Ambacht, Rotterdam; Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne,
  • A monologue for mediated voice, engaging the ventriloquial tropes of possession, dislocation, and the excessive physicality of (the at times seemingly autonomous and absurd) speaking voice.

Soft Teeth, 2017

Performance

  • Locatie: WORM, Rotterdam; TAC, Eindhoven,
  • Soft teeth is a composition for the live, amplified, whispering voice. Performed from the front row of a cinema with the house lights very dim, the text is made to be heard and felt rather than seen. The performing body is not visible, and becomes 'excessive' beyond its function of producing the voice. The speaking protagonist / s hiss forth a meditation on their desire to eat buildings: the kind of hectic, wandering, circular logic that takes over the mind in the dark.

Eiland Bouwen: Dredge the Centrum to Build the Edges! Take a copy!, 2017

Tentoonstelling / presentatie

  • Locatie: Galerie de Kromme Elleboog, Rotterdam
  • Eiland Bouwen consists of a large structure built to hold small objects and two small publications. A collection of experiences of the city environment, the work is made almost entirely from offcuts and discarded materials. The sculptures are primarily found objects that have been collected over time. Parts of the sculptures are resin casts from these cast-off objects or hand-molded wax shapes. The publication contains very short stories of Rotterdam as physical and social context.

Public Interiors, 2017

Performance

  • Locatie: WORM Ubik, Rotterdam
  • Performance based on observations of the social habits and physical infrastructures of public space in Rotterdam. Spoken in the second person, the text addresses how subject categories shift as a body moves through different parts of the city.

Light sleeper, 2016

Tentoonstelling / presentatie

  • Locatie: ST Paul St Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland
  • For Light sleeper, the artist removed all the curtains from her Rotterdam apartment and posted these for installation in the window of the Gallery. For the duration of the exhibition the lighting of window will be switched off only during opening hours, suggesting a different pattern of work and dormancy, in a Northern hemisphere timezone 12 hours behind. Kilmartin's recent works focus on specific items, places, and spatial conventions as a way to think about the qualities of time and work.
