Aubane Berthommé Martinez

artistiek onderzoek - gender - keramiek - lichaam - fotografie

Aubane is a working-class multidisciplinary artist and curator. She mainly experiments with photography and painting to explore and question power dynamics and identity, focusing on gender and sexuality. She gazes at the gaze by reappropriating exotified and historical western aesthetics, using self-representation as an empowering process. Her visual language combines pop-culture, kitsch, plants and extravagance.
In 2020 and 2022, she created Squish (a queer and feminist cultural platform) and Kollection Kitsch (a permanent bar exhibition series).
With protean events, Squish questions identity politics with an intersectional approach, facilitates social dialogue, cultural accessibility, supports emerging artists, combining research-based and non-academic approaches to facilitate solidarity/support among marginalized communities.
KK makes art more accessible, featuring local proletarian artists exploring rejected/mocked aesthetics/themes. The collective deconstructs dominant bourgeois gazes, celebrates bad taste and pop culture.
