Liezel van Beek is an artist, energy coach and entrepreneur from South Africa, currently living in Rotterdam. After her studies in journalism and psychology, she spent seven years in Asia, where she started various successful businesses. Before moving to Europe, Liezel studied art at The Stellenbosch Atelier under Vivian van der Merwe and Fiona Metcalfe. Her primary media include digital and alternative photography, print-making and painting. In her art and coaching, Liezel is interested in revealing potential and the myriad ways in which beauty and opportunity can be found in the mundane.

    • The technique used in Light Conversations is a combination of camera-less photography and painting. In the original lockdown images, gouache painting masks itself as photographic negatives to reveal the blue-print “positive” of waiting for better days. In the later images the light sensitive photographic medium acts as paint. Instead of using the cyanotype solution as a passive ground medium, it becomes an active agent that is manipulated to extract tonality and texture.
