Mohamed Abdelkarim

Mohamed Abdelkarim is a performer, filmmaker, and researcher. His practice is performance oriented. He considers performance as a research method and a practice through which he produces texts and images that embody multiforms. He employs and reflects on performative acts like narrating, singing, detecting, doing, fictioning, and recently, speculating. His current umbrella project focuses on the agency of the landscape as a witness of "a history we missed and a future we did not attend yet". His works have been included in the Sharjah-biennial 11, Guild Master of Cabaret Voltaire, Manifesta 11, Live Works Performance Act Award Vol.5, IT and Berlinale 72 /Forum Expanded, 2022. He received his MA in Arts in public spheres from édhéa /ecav, CH, 2016 and is currently Ph.D. candidate at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. Abdelkarim is living and working between Cairo and Rotterdam.

  • KAS is a group exhibition of a performative nature which constitutes the third episode of the "Anti-modern Trilogy", a cycle of exhibitions that Centrale Fies has been dedicating for some years to the relationship between objects and their activations, re-evaluating forms of knowledge (affective, somatic, visual) censored or suppressed by Western sex-colonial modernity.

  • The Taste of Water is a site for multiple encounters with and around water. The exhibition is a leaky vessel, with artworks flowing in and out of the space.   • A performance consisting of texts and images generated by the GPT-2-Artificial Intelligence model combined in a non-linear narrative. The narrative started from the event of a UFO sighting in Asyut, Egypt in 1989, moving on to other events in the same year. The AI-generated narrative moves between different milieus and characters, involving creatures from outer space, alien abduction, coup d'état, and the extinction of terrestrial species.
