Samboleap Tol (b. 1990) focuses on unearthing the postcolonial diasporic psyche, with a central focus on questions of embodied psychological inheritance. She explores ideas of dignity, love, and family that emerge after centuries of colonial brutality, and she explores how the act of reckoning through truth-telling can help restore faith and dignity.

For over a decade, she has pursued this collaborative practice, engaging with members of different postcolonial communities around the world, from London to Sydney to Yogyakarta. Through interactive installations and lecture-performances, she hopes to honor their spirits and stories.

In her works, she explores the connection between the contemporary social realities of postcolonial descendants with ancient and contemporary Southeast Asian cosmologies, as she seeks to address questions about how to relate to difficult pasts, untold truths, and the (unburied) dead.

Tol is heavily inspired by Theravada Buddhism, Hinduism, and indigenous Khmer spirituality. Ancestral veneration, in particular, forms the cornerstone of her thinking.

In 2023, she won the 10th edition of the Dolf Henkes Prize, Rotterdam’s biennial art award, and was an artist-in-residence at the Cemeti Institute for Art and Society in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Tol is an alum of UAL’s Central Saint Martins and Piet Zwart Institute.

Tol: "My artistic practice is largely informed by my experiences as a 2nd generation Cambodian. Our parents and their peers suffer from undiagnosed PTSD because they were war children, which had a detrimental effect in our homes growing up. Experiencing loss and displacement in my child- and adulthood broke my heart completely, but also set it wide open: I learned to express compassion for others early on, and understood the power of creating space for voices unheard. Today I am especially moved by airing (hi)stories that are painful, complex, and decolonial, because I believe reckoning with them will set everyone free."

Starlight
Starlight - >> Please click on the video for the explainer of this artwork << Starlight is a mechanically moving sound installation inspired by Southeast Asian cultural interpretations of the cosmic Mount Meru, such as the Khmer crematorium pavilion and the royal dancer’s crown. I developed an interest in the region’s cultural heritage to better understand the paths of my ancestors. This artwork replicates the significance of the finial, prominently featured in regional architecture, and the belief that this pillar can connect us to spirits in the skies and to our ancestors. The work also contains a rare meteorite found in Jepara, Indonesia, alongside four engravings in Arabic, Khmer, Old Javanese, and Hindi. I invited friends and mentors to share meaningful advice with me, which I then inscribed on the teak panels of the piece. For me, connecting with the wisdom of my ancestors and mentors is vital to learning how to live a healthy, meaningful life, as I recognize I cannot do it alone. Starlight was exhibited at SintenKITA in Yogyakarta (2024) and Unfair Amsterdam (2025).

The Cosmic Tortoise
The Cosmic Tortoise (2024) - >> Please click on the video for the explainer of this artwork << The Cosmic Tortoise is a meticulously carved tortoise with a hidden manuscript tucked inside its shell. I drew inspiration from Khmer, Javanese, and Indian mythologies, where the tortoise appears on or alongside temples. Inside the tortoise, a handwritten accordion-style manuscript in Khmer reveals a deeply personal and heartbreaking story I've grappled with since the pandemic – the loss of a loved one. The creation of this and other artworks, involving collaboration with engineers, historians, and artists in Asia over the past two years, has been a profound source of solace for me. This artwork and exhibition stand as a tribute to them. The Cosmic Tortoise is the result of a Yogyakartan residency at MenH Studios, where it was exhibited at Indonesian Visual Art Archive (July 2024). Since then it has been exhibited in Maastricht (Jendela, curated by Roy Voragen) and Leiden University (PURANA Project).

Dharma Songs
Dharma Songs (2023) - >> Please click on the video to view the explainer! << Dharma Songs v2 is an interactive sound installation. A viewer is invited to dip one of six fresh flowers into the water of the gong. Suddenly, a voice will start playing (from a hidden speaker within the wooden structure). Viewers can dip as many flowers as they desire, creating an unintentional symphony of narratives and voices. All six voices belong to individuals who are close friends or family. I had asked them to respond to the following questions via voicenote: "If you could share or ask something with one of your ancestors, what would you say?" and "What's something you're grateful for that you've received from your family?" The installation consists of a weathered 150 year old iron gong connected to a mini computer, which, in turn, is connected to electric wires covered in banana leaves that are linked to living flowers. When the petals make contact with the water in the gong, an electric circuit is completed, sending a signal to play a designated voice. Dharma Songs v2 was developed during a 3 month residency at Cemeti Institute for Arts and Society, Yogyakarta Indonesia, funded by the Mondriaanfonds. The work was displayed at TENT Rotterdam as part of the Dolf Henkes Prize 2023, where it won, and at PURANA Project exhibition at Leiden University, November-December 2024.

Tails of the Past
Tails of the Past (2023) - "Tails of the Past" is an engraving with Khmer script. The script is made by bending iron wires and hammering the script onto the aluminum. "Tails of the Past" was developed during a 3 month residency at Cemeti Institute for Arts and Society, Yogyakarta Indonesia, funded by the Mondriaanfonds. The work was on display at TENT Rotterdam as part of the Dolf Henkes Award 2023, where it won the prize.

Sathu Studio
Sathu Studio (2023) - Sathu Studio consists of two digital drawings, portraying the artist herself in different mental and spiritual states. On the left, she is pictured as a celestial Southeast Asian spirit, an apsara, as she is DJing with her friend. On the right, she and her friend embody the apsara sculptures from the late Douglas Latchford collection, who looted the sculptures. The mental states symbolized in the drawings are Samvega (right) and Passada (left), Buddhist notions for the stirring and stilling of the heart. Sathu Studio was displayed at TENT (2023) and Brutus (2024).

Lecture Performance
Lecture Performance (2022-2025*) - I started developing a lecture-performance series from 2022-2025+, as a way to showcase my writing and performance. I rewrite my performances for each occasion, employing different dramatic elements (dance, DJ, objects) depending on my anticipation of audience(s) present and the capability of the venue in their ability to support me. This lecture performance combines storytelling, music, animations, and dance. I have performed in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Yogyakarta, Berlin, Leiden and Antwerp.TENT Rotterdam (2023). The works could be seen from the street and from their apartments. Photography by Gianni Antonia. Rotterdam, Netherlands.
