Sophie de Vos

fotografie - digitaal - lichaam - mens - natuur

Sophie’s work consists of her fascination for what it means to be human. Human nature, dealing with the passing of time, transience, decay and loss are returning subjects in her work.

For human beings, these subjects are often emotionally charged, while in nature they’re the most common thing in the world. Sophie shows and questions this contrast in her work by creating images in which the human body is combined with natural materials. Words are an important part of Sophie’s work as well, and this shows in her use of titles. Her photographic series tell a story both visually and through language.

Unseen Art Fair

Tentoonstelling / presentatie

  • 22-09-2023 t/m 24-09-2023
  • In samenwerking met: Root Gallery
  • Locatie: Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam
  • On view at Unseen will be a selection of recent works as well as new creations. One of the series that Sophie has been working on is “I followed the footsteps of a stranger” which explores the concept of time - her main subject over the last few years. The passing of time, the decay that comes with it, the emotional weight it can carry.. However, nostalgia has never played a role in any of this, though it may have been appropriate. In her most recent works she plays into this element more.

Living Landscapes (Solo tentoonstelling, Root Gallery)

Tentoonstelling / presentatie

  • 20-02-2022 t/m 16-04-2022
  • In samenwerking met: Root Gallery
  • Locatie: Root Gallery (Robert Fruinstraat 52), Rotterdam
  • Spectators can really step into a world where beauty and decay are not treated as opposites, but as similar and complementary. The raw beauty of a flower entering the last stage of its life is contrasted with the soft energy of the female body. In the images shapes, structures, and colours suddenly become visible, while attention is also brought to the various textures, colours, veins, birthmarks, and so-called “flaws” that make the flowers and bodies even more alluring in their natural states.
