Luca Tichelman

video

Luca Tichelman (1995, NL) primarily focuses on video, alongside photography and small moving sculptures. She is deeply interested in the ingredients that create the story of a Self and the need to repeat that story in order to affirm one's existence. By creating staged settings in which characters play a collection of different roles, she explores the innate human longing for a sense of belonging and the key role of identity in fulfilling this need. In a sense, Luca is rediscovering a childhood pastime - playing different roles in her room. Now turning this experience into an exploration of the fundamental human need to play.

MY ALL a low budget specticale, 2023 - A half-hour playbacked monologue. MY ALL is a compilation of anecdotes. The stories within the collection prompt questions about the authenticity of memories and the role of perception in shaping them. Is memory mutable? Can we play with reality and memories without compromising their truth? Are imagined memories less real or does the human condition of imagining consist of some kind of legit reality? Each anecdote is accompanied by a carefully chosen object, whether small or substantial, which the performer presents while narrating the story.

SMALL THINGS MATTER, 2022 - Three small moving sculptures made together with my mother Beau Tichelman. Every sculpture refers to something my mother ever did or said that had an impact on me. 1. I REMEMBER MY MOTHER TELLING ME ALL HER FRIENDS THOUGHT I WAS GETTING FAT. 2. MY MOTHER GAVE ME MY ONE AND ONLY VALENTINES CARD, I STILL FEEL LOVED. 3. MY MOTHER ENTRUSTED ME A SECRET AND I’M KEEPING IT. I aspire to demonstrate the remarkable influence that seemingly insignificant details can exert. underscore the notion that our recollections can serve as mirrors reflecting our individuality. It becomes evident that not everyone recalls the same facets when encountering shared experiences. This exploration delves into the relentless pursuit of understanding our essence and the pivotal roles our family members assume in shaping our identity.
THIS IS US A STORY OF THOSE THEM ME AND WE (2022) - Three characters try to articulate who they believe to be by performing various scenes in a self-created miniature theater. This quest manifests in three different scenes, during which they contemplate a distinct form of art. Every scene is introduced with the phrase; “THIS IS US”. Scene one, (those) they act as if they are a theater group rehearsing a scene they discuss how a character should be portrayed. Scene two (them) they watch television judging the lives they're looking at and compare it to their own. Scene three (me) they immerse themselves in a museum setting. As they gaze upon a piece of art, they engage in a discussion about their varied interpretations. Lastly (we) an epilogue unfolds in which they collectively transform into a piece of art, symbolically "dancing into eternity."
